Oceans reveal further impacts of climate change, says UAB expert

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The increasing acidity of the world's oceans – and that acidity's growing threat to marine species – are definitive proof that the atmospheric carbon dioxide that is causing climate change is also negatively affecting the marine environment, says world-renowned Antarctic marine biologist Jim McClintock, Ph.D., professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Biology.
"The oceans are a sink for the carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere," says McClintock, who has spent more than two decades researching the marine species off the coast of Antarctica. Carbon dioxide is absorbed by oceans, and through a chemical process hydrogen ions are released to make seawater more acidic.
"Existing data points to consistently increasing oceanic acidity, and that is a direct result of increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere; it is incontrovertible," McClintock says. "The ramifications for many of the organisms that call the water home are profound."

A substance's level of acidity is measured by its pH value; the lower the pH value, the more acidic is the substance. McClintock says data collected since the pre-industrial age indicates the mean surface pH of the oceans has declined from 8.2 to 8.1 units with another 0.4 unit decline possible by century's end. A single whole pH unit drop would make ocean waters 10 times more acidic, which could rob many marine organisms of their ability to produce protective shells – and tip the balance of marine food chains.
"There is no existing data that I am aware of that can be used to debate the trend of increasing ocean acidification," he says.
McClintock and three co-authors collected and reviewed the most recent data on ocean acidification at high latitudes for an article in the December 2009 issue of Oceanography magazine, a special issue that focuses on ocean acidification worldwide. McClintock also recently published research that revealed barnacles grown under acidified seawater conditions produce weaker adult shells.

Antarctica as the Ground Zero for Climate Change

McClintock says the delicate balance of life in the waters that surround the frozen continent of Antarctica is especially susceptible to the effects of acidification. The impact on the marine life in that region will serve as a bellwether for global climate-change effects, he says.
"The Southern Ocean is a major global sink for carbon dioxide. Moreover, there are a number of unique factors that threaten to reduce the availability of abundant minerals dissolved in polar seawater that are used by marine invertebrates to make their protective shells," McClintock says.
"In addition, the increased acidity of the seawater itself can literally begin to eat away at the outer surfaces of shells of existing clams, snails and other calcified organisms, which could cause species to die outright or become vulnerable to new predators."
One study McClintock recently conducted with a team of UAB researchers revealed that the shells of post-mortem Antarctic marine invertebrates evidenced erosion and significant loss of mass within only five weeks under simulated acidic conditions.
McClintock says acidification also could exert a toll on the world's fisheries, including mollusks and crustaceans. He adds that the potential loss of such marine populations could greatly alter the oceans' long-standing food chains and produce negative ripple effects on human industries or food supplies over time.
"So many fundamental biological processes can be influenced by ocean acidification, and the change in the oceans' makeup in regions such as Antarctica are projected to occur over a time period measured in decades," McClintock says.
"Evolution simply may be unable to keep up, because it typically takes marine organisms longer periods, hundreds or even thousands of years to naturally adapt," he says. "But ocean acidification is simply happening too quickly for many species to survive unless we reverse the trend of increasing anthropogenically generated carbon dioxide that is in large part driving climate change."

YONAGUNI, JAPAN: ANTEDILUVIAN pre ~12000 BC CIVILIZATION I - UNDERWATER MANMADE STRUCTURES - 7

【出展リンク】: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_gAV8CskA4

2010年01月17日 : http://www.youtube.com/user/igorfrankenstein2

RUSSIAN TEAM OF DIVERS-EXPLORERS, LEAD BY ANDREY MAKAREVICH explores 80-100 feet high underwater man-made structure that composes a temple-pyramid YONAGUNI. This is the best underwater footage in existence so far that I came across with about the legendary site. ANDREW commenting their manmade discoveries in Russian (I did not translate footage with adding English subtitles-translation), but just watching the footage one would come to the realization of the presence of manmade artifacts and constructions, including THE HEAD. The site included a square-shaped structure covered with coral, a giant platform with edges and corners, as well as streets, stairways, and an arched building. One could say that the ruins resembled an ALTAR IN THE ANCIENT CITY. It covered about 200 meters from west to east, and about 140 meters from north to south. Its highest point reached about 26 meters. NOTE: The whole story started in 1986, when a diver near the island of Yonaguni Jima, off the southern tip of Japan (around Okinawa) came across some strange structures about 25 meters below sea level. They appeared to be stepped structures with terraces and ramps. One of the largest pyramid structures is 600 feet wide and 90 feet high with five separate levels of stone blocks with what appears to be road surrounding the structure. Tool marks and carvings have been discovered upon the stones (and documented) which indicate that they have were constructed rather than being natural stone structures. Masaaki Kimura, a marine geologist from Japans Ryukyus University, Japan has been studying and mapping the site for over 15 years and believes that the site is over five thousand years old but was sunk during an earthquake two thousand years ago. Others have estimated that the structure is far older including Teruaki Ishii, professor of geology at Tokyo University who determined that the submergence occurred at the end of the LAST ICE AGE which was around 10000 (12000 BC) years ago (allegedly over twice as old as the pyramids in Egypt by suggestion of the modern science) If this is the case, then our history books would have to be revised to take into account an advanced Eastern culture (LEMURIA, MU?) advanced than any early Western culture. It is interesting to note that a number of tools have been discovered both on land and in the sea around the structures. Close to the pyramid structure, what is thought to be the carving of a human head has been discovered (several feet tall), along with numerous unknown hieroglyphs (see hieroglyphs here http://www.pureinsight.org/node/1678)." rel="nofollow" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #0033cc; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="http://www.pureinsight.org/node/1678).">http://www.pureinsight.org/node/1678). NOTE 2: VEDIC TEXTS state that 4 types of people arrived on this planet UNCHANGED (were not created by Hebrew-Jewish, Christian & Muslim God) WHITES, called RASA all current white people of Europe, also all dispersed all over the planet from this race; BLACKS all black people in Africa, also all dispersed all over the planet from this race; ORIENTALS all oriental people including Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Mongolians, Evenki, Chukcha, etc, also all dispersed all over the planet from this race; REDS all native American Indians Inca, Maya, Aztec, etc, Australian Aborigines, also all dispersed all over the planet from this race. Taking in consideration Vedic knowledge - IT IS VERY OBVIOUS THAT UNDERWATER TEMPLE IN YONAGUNI BELONGS TO THE ORIENTAL RACE THAT EXISTED ON THIS PLANET IN PRE-DELUVIAN TIMES AND SUBMERGED UNDERWATER DURING THE ENF OF THE LAST ICE AGE. NOTE 3: Studies show scientists now estimate that the earth was born 4.6 billion years ago. Pre-hominid primates did not appear until the Pleistocene time, the Quaternary of Cenozoic, namely the Ice Age, which was about 1.8 million years ago. Based on fossil studies, some scientists believe that social activities and culture did not emerge until Holocene, about 12,000 years ago, during the decline and ending of the last ice age. Therefore, during the next 7,000 years, these cultures didn't appear to advance much and remained in the Stone Age. Records of writings and symbols first appeared about 5,000 year ago. The era before that time was referred to as the prehistoric period. HOWEVER, to the scientists' bewilderment, more and more prehistoric relics discovered on the ocean floor are challenging this point of view. The architects of the undersea relics not only had ingenious building and artistic skills, but also showed signs of an advanced civilization. Moreover, they knew written language and were able to build the pyramids. Current technology indicates that the area was above sea level 10,000 or more years ago. It is thus apparent that advanced civilization existed during prehistoric times, long before the Neolithic Period. Due to unknown reasons, these civilizations disappeared and left only wreckage under the sea. Here is some evidence for their existence.

Ocean Wave Machine by S.D.E. Energy Ltd.

【出展リンク】: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf5fOr8XjpY

S.D.E. Energy Ltd. is a Tel Aviv, Israel manufacturer and marketer of Sea Wave Power Plants - utilizing sea wave energy to produce electricity economically, and in an environmentally-friendly manner claiming that their system can generate electricity for 2 cents per kWh.

Basically, the buoys are placed on a breakwater and they move up and down, according to the frequency of sea waves. The buoys' movement press a hydraulic liquid, which is regulated by systems that convert the energy to circular systems that operate an electric generator.

The buoys, which make 10% of the system, are placed in the water, and the rest of the whole system, which makes 90%, is set on land with the option being located on up to 500 meters from sea shore. In the event of storms, the system is easily accessible for technical service. Additionlly, the buoys are neutralized and laid down on the jetty or the shore.
